Autumn term - week 1
Hello Sounding Out families
Well this is my first email to you all and I’m very excited to be in touch with you again. I’m missing our lovely Saturday Jam sessions and I hope that it won’t be too long before we can get together soon. In the meantime, I’ll be sending you some interesting things to listen to and sometimes things to do too!
Last weekend would have normally been the Notting Hill Carnival - two days of wonderful parades and music. It’s usually very busy! I wonder if any of you have ever been?
In our sessions we started to learn how to play a samba rhythm that you would hear if you went to another famous carnival – the Rio Carnival! This spectacular event happens every year around February in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It involves thousands of musicians and dancers who work together in big groups called Samba Schools. Each school may have up to 3000 people who work on the costumes, the incredible floats, the dancing and of course the music!
WATCH this clip from BBC Bitesize to see a 12-year-old boy in Rio preparing to play in the Carnival. Listen out for any CALL AND RESPONSE and the MESTRE (or leader) controlling the group using the APITO. This music is so infectious – I cannot help smiling and tapping my feet!
WARNING! There is a mistake in the text written underneath the video. Can anyone work out what it is?
CHALLENGE. Watch this clip of a very talented musician playing all the instruments in a samba rhythm. Listen out for the call and response at the beginning using a REPINIQUE. You might have spotted that he is using a different type of shaker to the GANZA that we used. It looks like lots of metal circles joined in rows. Can anyone find out what it is called?
I hope that you have enjoyed seeing your friends back at school this week. A new school year is a good time to make a fresh start. So, if your instrument has been getting a little dusty and neglected over the summer, now is a good time to get it out and have a play!
Please do let me know how you are getting on. I can’t wait to see who finds the answers to my two questions this week!
Can you spot the mistake on the Bitesize page?
What is the name of the shaker used in the Samba video?
Have a good week! Jemma
